Rethinking Leadership in 5 Steps
November 8, 2015 @ 9:00 am - 11:00 am
This plenary speech opens with comparing and contrasting management vs. leadership (two concepts that are commonly used interchangeably in Persian language), in the context of governmental, academic and healthcare delivery organizations. Then, five key dimensions of healthcare leadership is presented and discussed with case studies and illustrative examples from similar settings and industries. These dimensions consist of A) Personal Values of the leader, B) His or her ability to create and instill a “Shared Vision”, C) Leadership Character, which in turn is subdivided into intellectual, moral, operational and social characters, D) Engagement as defined by the leader’s ability to connect, motivate, inspire and move a wide spectrum of stakeholders including employees, customers (patients), peers and his/her team, and finally E) Context, i.e. the organizational and sociocultural systems in which leadership happens. This speech ends with some leadership best practices as well as evidence-based recommendations applicable to any leadership situation and setting. This is a prelude to Dr. Azarmina’s signature workshop on holistic leadership development suitable for senior leaders with a very broad spectrum of responsibilities.
